The subjects of Denis Buckleys ouvre are, for the most part, flowers, and plants but also landscapes or parts of a favourite garden in Bergen-Enkheim. In addition, his motifs are guided by impressions made on his numerous trips abroad. For example, Spain, South Africa, Cuba, Nicaragua, or the Philippines and of course his native Ireland. He also paints Frankfurt motifs such as the Holzhausenschlösschen (Holzhausen castle) and the Eisernen Steg (footbridge over the river Main) as well as landscapes in the nearby Taunus area.
Denis Buckleys paintings cannot be categorized in accordance with art history, just as Denis does not see himself as part of any rigid barriers or conventions. At best one could describe him as an “expressive Impressionist” since his paintings are extremely forceful, on the one hand due to the formal simplification and, on the other hand due to the strong, luminous paints which he prefers to use.
For quite a while now Denis has been experimenting with special paints that have amazing effects when placed under UV-A Light (blacklight). So you have not just one painting but several different paintings depending on the Light used.
He chooses his painting techniques depending on his impression of the motifs in question sometimes almost pointillist as in the image of the garden in Bergen or he strings together different stripes of colour to formimaginative seascapes.
A zest for life is clearly highlighted by the works of Denis Buckley and the observer experiences his paintings as a festival of colour and unforgettable lucid moments.
